The way that I viewed the choice of color for the retelling of the past was that those memories were really brought to life by color. You see and feel the joy of these characters, an element that seems to be missing from the present. The current situation was depicted in black and white to help accentuate the bleak conditions and the sorrow Di was feeling. I felt the same way as Cecilia. I thought the use of color in the past and the black and white in the present was another great use of symbolism on the director's part. In the flashbacks when Di fell in love with the new teacher, the audience could really feel the love between them and could see how Di really came to life when he came to town. This is perfectly expressed with the use of color. Then when the husband passes away and Di is grieving, the use of black and white helps to mirror the emotions of the characters and create a dull, depressing visual experience. It is interesting that usually black and white movies do not seem dull or depressing to me, but when used alongside scenes with color and because of the symbolism seen with the use of color, I felt extra sad when it turned back to black and white. - Jackie
I agree with Cecilia and Jackie as well. The color transitions in the film, I believe, are suppose to represent Di's feeling of love - the warmth of the colors and the color symbolism conveys the love they share. Even though their son is narrating the film/ story line, you feel the love Di has for the teacher and the love the teacher has for Di.
I also agree with Cecilia and Jackie. I believe that the color choice was representative of the emotions being felt by Di in both the past and present. During the present time she was in mourning, so this was shown through the use of black and white. During the past she was falling in love with the teacher and it was a happier time for her, so this is shown in color. Doing this allowed us to easily view her emotions and that of the teachers (the joy they felt, their frustration, their sadness), and the hope they had for their relationship to progress (symbolized by the use of the color red worn by Di). - Natalie Trzcinko
